HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT WITH WATER

Timing is important. Water before meals at least 30, 40 minutes, no water during meals.

THE PROCESS:

Step 1

Read the manufacturer’s instructions for installing the Enagic water system to your kitchen water source. Install as directed to your cold water supply. Push the “Kangen™” button to prepare drinking water at the optimal Ph. level of 8.5 or above, as recommended by Japanese scientists at Shiga University.

Step 2

Weigh yourself and record the number in the journal for a starting point reference. Drink one glass upon rising the first day you begin with the Kangen™ water. Hydrate your digestive system by drinking one glass 30 to 40 minutes before your midday meal. Consume one glass between lunch and one between lunch and dinner.

Step 3

Drink one glass 30 to 40 minutes before your evening meal. Write down your meal and water times for the day, as well as record how you feel physically.

Step 4

Read your journal entries the following day and try to stick to this schedule for the duration of your weight loss program. Keep your consumption of all food drinks consistent, especially your servings of Kangen™ water.

Early Death Comes From Drinking Distilled Water

During nearly 19 years of clinical practice I have had the opportunity to observe the health effects of drinking different types of water. Most of you would agree that drinking unfiltered tap water could be hazardous to your health because of things like

  • parasites
  • chlorine
  • fluoride
  • dioxins

Many health fanatics, however, are often surprised to hear me say that drinking distilled water on a regular, daily basis is potentially dangerous.

Paavo Airola wrote about the dangers of distilled water in the 1970’s when it first became a fad with the health food crowd.

Distillation is the process in which water is boiled, evaporated and the vapour condensed. Distilled water is free of dissolved minerals and, because of this, has the special property of being able to actively absorb toxic substances from the body and eliminate them. Studies validate the benefits of drinking distilled water when one is seeking to cleanse or detoxify the system for short periods of time (a few weeks at a time).

Fasting using distilled water can be dangerous because of the rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride) and trace minerals like magnesium, deficiencies of which can cause heart beat irregularities and high blood pressure. Cooking foods in distilled water pulls the minerals out of them and lowers their nutrient value.

Distilled water is an active absorber and oxidant when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it acidic. The more distilled water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Distilled water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact. Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water.”

The most toxic commercial beverages that people consume (i.e. cola beverages and other soft drinks) are made from distilled water. Studies have consistently shown that heavy consumers of soft drinks (with or without sugar) spill huge amounts of calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals into the urine.

The more mineral loss, the greater the risk for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and a long list of degenerative diseases generally associated with premature aging.

A growing number of health care practitioners and scientists from around the world have been advocating the theory that aging and disease is the direct result of the accumulation of acid waste products in the body.

There is a great deal of scientific documentation that supports such a theory. A poor diet may be partially to blame for the waste accumulation.

These and other junk foods can cause the body to become more acidic:

  • meats
  • sugar
  • alcohol
  • fried foods
  • soft drinks
  • processed foods
  • white flour products
  • dairy products

Stress, whether mental or physical can lead to acid deposits in the body.

There is a correlation between the consumption of soft water (distilled water is extremely soft) and the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Cells, tissues and organs do not like to be dipped in acid and will do anything to buffer this acidity including the removal of minerals from the skeleton and the manufacture of bicarbonate in the blood.

“The longer one drinks distilled water, the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies and an ACID state”.

I have done well over 3000 mineral evaluations using a combination of blood, urine and hair tests in my practice. Almost without exception, people who consume distilled water exclusively, eventually develop multiple mineral deficiencies.

Those who supplement their distilled water intake with trace minerals are not as deficient but still not as adequately nourished in minerals as their non-distilled water drinking counterparts even after several years of mineral supplementation.

The ideal water for the human body should be slightly alkaline and this requires the presence of minerals like

  • calcium
  • magnesium

Distilled water tends to be acidic and can only be recommended as a way of drawing poisons out of the body in a very short period of time.Once this is accomplished, the continued drinking of distilled water is a bad idea.

Water filtered through reverse osmosis tends to be  less acidic and is acceptable for regular use, but mineral water is better

Water filtered through a solid charcoal filter or ionizer is slightly alkaline. Longevity is associated with the regular consumption of hard water (high in minerals). Disease and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of distilled water.

Avoid it except in special circumstances.

¿SE PUEDE TRATAR LA DIABETES CON AGUA ALCALINA IONIZADA?

Una vision actual del problema y soluciones:

Solamente en Alemania, el número de personas diabéticas se estima en unos 6,3 millones. Según los expertos, una octava parte de la población estará directamente afectada por la diabetes de aquí a finales de 2010. Los graves daños y perjuicios, descuidados durante largo tiempo, que acompañan a la fase de pre-diabetes (de 10 a 20 años) y las complicaciones de esta enfermedad a largo plazo, igualmente de costosas, ha acelerado la investigación de opciones terapéuticas paralelas, innovadoras y eficaces. El presente estudio revela que las personas con diabetes del tipo 1 y tipo 2 con un tratamiento adyuvante a base de agua ionizada alcalina con microminerales -oligoelementos- activos, presentan una mejora significativa de los síntomas clínicos que permite reducir considerablemente la dosis de medicación antidiabética. La tasa de glucemia sanguínea y el índice de hemoglobina glucosilada o índice glucémico promedio, HbA1C, así como otros valores metabólicos como la lipidemia presentan una mejora evidente que perdura durante tiempo. Estos resultados ponen de manifiesto los efectos beneficiosos de una aplicación adyuvante de microminerales activos en el agua alcalina ionizada en el tratamiento de las personas diabéticas.

El mecanismo de la diabetes

La absorción de glucosa por nuestras células supone la presencia de una concentración suficiente de la hormona insulina en la sangre. La insulina, producida por los Islotes de Langerhans del páncreas, posee la “llave” que permite el acceso de la glucosa sanguínea a las células del cuerpo. Al mismo tiempo que libera su energía, la glucosa se oxida en el interior de la célula. Cuando la célula no está capacitada para absorber la glucosa, la concentración glucémica se eleva considerablemente.

La diabetes del tipo 1 (diabetes clásica insulino-insuficiente o insulino-dependiente) se distingue por una producción de insulina en principio deficitaria, y luego súbitamente interrumpida, fenómeno provocado por una reacción auto-inmunitaria en las células beta pancreáticas productoras de insulina. Sin la “llave” de la insulina, la glucosa no puede ser absorbida por las células corporales.

Las células que se vuelven insensibles a la hormona de la insulina, son calificadas como insulino-resistentes. Es entonces cuando tenemos la situación de la diabetes mellitus del tipo 2. Las “llaves” no se ajustan ya a la “cerradura”, es decir, la puerta, los receptores celulares se encuentran “bloqueados” o se abren muy poco. En este caso hay que procurar nuevas “llaves” (insulina). La sobreproducción que se hace necesaria viene acompañada de un sobreesfuerzo desastroso que causa estragos a las células beta pancreáticas. Estas, en el proceso, se agotan y la secreción de insulina se reduce de manera continuada y progresiva.

El papel de los radicales libres, designados igualmente Especies Reactivas de Oxígeno (ROS) es cada vez más frecuentemente abordado en la aparición de la diabetes. Los radicales libres son átomos o moléculas que presentan en su envoltorio externo electrones libres desparejados, de vida corta y fuertemente reactivos. Para restablecer su estabilidad, van en búsqueda de los electrones que les faltan a lugares, entre otros, como las membranas celulares o la sustancia genética, lo mismo que a las células beta del páncreas, productoras de la insulina, las cuales así se ven expuestas a los ataques y efectos nefastos y destructores (estrés oxidativo) de los radicales libres ROS.

En la revista médica Journal of Clinical Investigation, el Dr. Michael Ristow y colaboradores presenta un modelo animal, para el cual se han inducido síntomas clínicos comparables a la diabetes humana de tipo 2, neutralizando en las células pancreáticas los caracteres hereditarios para la proteína frataxina mitocondrial. Esta proteína juega a nivel de las mitocondrias, las centrales energéticas de las células, un papel importante en la desintoxicación de las especies reactivas de oxígeno ROS.

Ha podido observar una destrucción de las células beta pancreáticas en roedores, inducida por una inyección de aloxana. La aloxana ALX es un diabetógeno clásico, engendra síntomas comparables a los de la diabetes humana del tipo 1. Su potencial tóxico reside en su capacidad generadora de especies reactivas de oxigeno ROS, en particular de radicales de aniones superóxido, peróxidos de hidrógeno y de hidroxilos. (Schulte im Walde, Sabine) Los niveles altos de ROS son entre otros los responsables de la aparición de una sintomatología de insulino-resistencia, de la diabetes del tipo 2. Una reducción de estas especies reactivas de oxigeno ROS ha permitido en roedores obesos insulino resistentes mejorar la sensibilidad a la insulina y a la homeostasis de la glucosa (Houstis N, Rosen ED, Lander ES). Los resultados de estos estudios y de otros análisis permiten concluir que las especies reactivas de oxígeno ROS y su estrés oxidativo juegan un papel de particular importancia en la aparición de la diabetes mellitus, también llamada azucarada.

Lo que permite establecer la siguiente hipótesis

Un medio de reducir o de neutralizar las especies reactivas de oxígeno ROS, podría tener un efecto en la terapia de las personas diabéticas. ¿Qué es el agua alcalina ionizada? El proceso de activación funciona según el principio de la electrólisis por el flujo de un electrodo positivo y de otro electrodo negativo. Su adición de oligoelementos actúa directamente en la concentración de los agentes activos. Así es posible ajustar a las necesidades fisiológicas el potencial RedOx, el pH y los microminerales activos biológicamente disponibles.

Con la ayuda de una membrana selectiva, obtenemos agua alcalina de potencial RedOx reductor (antioxidante) así como agua ácida con potencial RedOx oxidante. En función del potencial RedOx y de los iones minerales, el agua ionizada produce un gran número de efectos fisiológicos positivos en la salud del ser humano y de los animales, tales como la desacidificación, el refuerzo del sistema inmunitario, la lucha contra los radicales libres y otros.

Este fenómeno recaba cada vez mayor atención médica y científica entre investigadores, científicos y médicos de Japón, Corea del Sur y Rusia. Países en los cuales los protocolos de investigación científica y clínica experimental han sido puestos al día con el uso de esta tecnología y metodología médica para tratamientos de diabetes, cáncer, enfermedades cardiovasculares, neuro-vegetativas, musculo-esqueléticas y otras patologías crónicas y degenerativas. En Alemania y resto de Europa la importancia del potencial RedOx para la salud no ha dado lugar a investigaciones particulares, exceptuadas las realizadas en el campo de los alimentos acuosos (Hoffmann, M. 1977).

La acción de los antioxidantes conocidos, actualmente utilizados en la terapia de la diabetes, se limita sobre todo a un papel adyuvante y es poco influyente en los parámetros clínicos de la enfermedad. Por esta razón la investigación de un nuevo agente antioxidante capaz de aumentar la producción de insulina o la sensibilidad de las células hacia esta hormona, conoce una posición de gran actualidad. En sus estudios experimentales, Shirahato y colaboradores (1997), aportan la prueba de que el agua alcalina ionizada presenta una capacidad extraordinaria y evidente como reductor antioxidante. El agua alcalina ionizada tiene la extraordinaria capacidad de “capturar” y neutralizar los radicales libres.

Esto permite deducir que el agua alcalina ionizada de potencial RedOx negativo posee propiedades protectoras para las células beta pancreáticas productoras de insulina y que en concomitancia con los oligoelementos minerales adoptados, puede también influir en los parámetros clínicos de la diabetes humana. Este estudio demuestra por primera vez en la historia que el uso y la ingesta de agua alcalina ionizada en el tratamiento de las personas diabéticas de los tipos 1 y 2 induce a una mejora de la sintomatología clínica, de las tasas de glucemia, del índice glucémico promedio de hemoglobina glucosilada HbA1C y de la lipidemia, y que permite así una reducción significativa de la medicación antidiabética.

Procedimiento y conducción del estudio

El presente estudio fue realizado sobre 142 personas con diabetes mellitus de los tipos 1 y 2. Los pacientes diabéticos del tipo 2 presentaban sensación de sed, sequedad de boca, debilidad generalizada y dolores de las extremidades inferiores, así como pérdida de agudeza visual y cuadros de hipertensión. La medicación que estaban tomando consistía en la ingesta oral de antidiabéticos o la administración subcutánea de insulina.

Los pacientes diabéticos del tipo1 sufrían igualmente de sequedad de boca e insomnio. Los pacientes de este grupo recibieron insulina subcutánea o por vía inyectada. Para este proyecto de investigación, los pacientes se repartieron en cuatro grupos:

·El grupo 1, grupo de control, no recibió tratamiento suplementario.

·El grupo 2, grupo experimental, recibió, a parte de su medicación habitual, y durante un periodo de cuatro a seis semanas, ingesta de agua alcalina ionizada de potencial RedOx reductor (antioxidante) con microelementos minerales en concentración definida.

·Para los otros dos grupos de control (grupos 3 y 4), el tratamiento auxiliar consistió para uno la ingesta de agua alcalina ionizada sin microelementos minerales activos específicos y para el otro micro elementos minerales sin agua ionizada. Por falta de espacio, nos limitamos a citar estos grupos y solo figuran de manera alusiva en la descripción de los diagramas.

Todos los pacientes fueron objeto de un seguimiento médico exhaustivo, antes durante y directamente después del tratamiento lo mismo que al cabo de uno, dos, tres, cuatro y cinco meses después.

Valores analíticos de criterio del éxito del tratamiento

· Glucemia (en ayunas)

· Valor HbA1C (describe la hemoglobina glucosilada, de enlaces químicos con residuos de azúcar. Mientras que la determinación de la tasa glucémica no ofrece más que un valor instantáneo de la situación actual del metabolismo, la determinación de la hemoglobina glucosilada permite evaluar el equilibrio metabólico para una duración promedio de cuatro a doce semanas.)

· Reducción a largo plazo de la cantidad de insulina administrada.

· Colesterolemia (HDL y LDL) (Colesterol bueno y malo)

·Triglicéridos (a menudo elevados en las personas diabéticas y asociados a valores bajos de HDL y a una resistencia a la insulina)

·Tensión arterial (la hipertensión presenta un riesgo adicional, por el hecho que la diabetes y la hipertensión dañan y perjudican de manera conjunta los mismos órganos)

Resultados

En los pacientes con diabetes de tipos los 1 y 2 a los que se suministró una ingesta adicional de microminerales ionizados en agua alcalina ionizada con potencial RedOx reductor (antioxidante), se pudo constatar al cabo de seis a siete días una regresión de la sensación de sed, de la sequedad de boca y de la debilidad generalizada.

Al cabo de 10 a 14 días, se registró igualmente una atenuación de la debilidad generalizada y de los dolores musculares así como de las parestesias.

Los resultados de los valores medidos se representan en las figuras de la 1 a la 6.

La glucemia

En los pacientes con diabetes del tipo 2, tratados durante un periodo de cuatro a seis semanas con ingesta adicional de agua alcalina ionizada de RedOx reductor (antioxidante) con microelementos minerales activos, la tasa de glucemia descendió a partir de las dos semanas. La disminución máxima de la tasa de glucemia fue de 25,7%. El efecto positivo perduró de 4 a 7 meses (a veces más tiempo en algunos pacientes)

En los grupos de control 1 y 4, no se registró ningún cambio significativo. En el grupo de control 3 (agua ionizada sin micro elementos minerales activos específicos), se registró un descenso de la glucemia en ayunas. El descenso máximo de la tasa de glucemia registrada fue de 11,5%.

En los pacientes con diabetes del tipo1, tratados durante un período de cuatro a seis semanas con ingesta adicional de agua alcalina ionizada de potencial RedOx reductor (antioxidante) con microelementos minerales activos, se constató a partir de las dos primeras semanas un descenso de la tasa de glucemia en ayunas. El descenso máximo de la tasa de glucemia registrada fue de 33,2 % y esta mejora perduró de 4 a 6 meses. En los grupos de control 1, 3 y 4 no se constataron cambios significativos.

Valor HbA1C

En los pacientes con diabetes del tipo 2, tratados durante un periodo de cuatro a seis semanas con ingesta adicional de agua alcalina ionizada de potencial reductor (antioxidante) con microelementos minerales activos, se registró un descenso significativo del valor HbA1C. El valor máximo medio registrado al cabo de cuatro semanas presentó una reducción de 9,2 % a 7,2%. Cinco meses después del tratamiento, el valor se situaba todavía en 7,9 %, es decir 1,3 % por debajo del valor inicial de 9,2%. Aquí es particularmente interesante constatar que el descenso aproximado de 1 % en el valor HbA1C disminuye un 45% el riesgo de ceguera.

En los pacientes con diabetes del tipo1, tratados durante un periodo de cuatro a seis semanas con ingesta adicional de agua alcalina ionizada de potencial reductor (antioxidante) con microelementos minerales activos, se registró un descenso significativo del valor de HbA1C. En el espacio de ocho semanas, el valor se redujo de un máximo de 7,9% a 6,8%. Cinco meses tras la terminación del tratamiento, el valor HbA1C no pasó el nivel de 6,9 %. En los grupos de control 1, 3 y 4 no se constataron cambios significativos.

Reducción de la medicación

En los pacientes con diabetes del tipo 2, tratados durante un periodo de cuatro a seis semanas con ingesta adicional de agua alcalina ionizada de potencial RedOx reductor (antioxidante) con microelementos minerales activos, la reducción de la mediación antidiabética alcanzó el 47% (máximo) y representaba todavía un 37% al cabo de cinco meses.

En los grupos de control 1, 3 y 4 no se constataron cambios significativos en el valor HbA1C.

En el grupo 2, los efectos positivos del tratamiento en los pacientes con diabetes del tipo 2 (insulino-deficientes), fueron más evidentes que sus tasas de HbA1C y que sus necesidades de inyecciones de insulina que eran importantes.

En los pacientes con diabetes del tipo 1 tratados durante un periodo de cuatro a seis semanas con ingesta adicional de agua alcalina ionizada de RedOx reductor (antioxidante) con microelementos minerales activos se registró al cabo de cuatro semanas un descenso máximo de 37% en la dosis necesaria de insulina. Cuatro meses después, la reducción de la medicación alcanzaba aún 31 %.

En los grupos de control 1, 3 y 4 no se constataron cambios significativos del valor HbA1C.

Lipidemia (colesterol y triglicéridos)

En los pacientes con diabetes de los tipos 1 y 2 tratados con ingesta adicional de agua alcalina ionizada de potencial RedOx reductor (antioxidante) con microelementos minerales activos, se constató un efecto significativo en el conjunto del metabolismo de los lípidos.

El índice de colesterol en general, tanto de los triglicéridos como del LDL, disminuyó, mientras que se puso de manifiesto un aumento del HDL. Estos resultados se mantuvieron estables de cuatro a siete meses.

En los grupos de control 1 y 4, no se constataron cambios significativos de los valores.

En el grupo de control 3 (agua alcalina ionizada sin micro elementos activos específicos) se constató un descenso neto del colesterol general y del valor LDL y un aumento del valor HDL.

Hipertensión

El estudio reveló que la ingesta de agua alcalina ionizada junto con micro elementos minerales activos específicos produjo en algunos pacientes una disminución de la hipertensión.

De 50 pacientes con diabetes del tipo 2, 18 sufrían hipertensión.

Tras el tratamiento, se registró en 14 de esos 18 pacientes un descenso significativo de la tensión arterial, lo que permitió reducir su dosis de anti-hipertónicos.

En seis pacientes, se pudo llegar incluso a una normalización de la tensión arterial, lo que hizo innecesaria la continuidad de la medicación para la hipertensión.

Síntesis de los resultados

La ventaja aquí presentada de un tratamiento adyuvante para pacientes con diabetes de tipos 1 y 2, basada en la ingesta de agua alcalina ionizada con micro elementos minerales activos, radica en la notoria mejoría de la sintomatología clínica y en la reducción significativa de la medicación antidiabética.

Simultáneamente, se registró reducción muy considerable de la tasa de glucemia, del HbA1C (control medio-largo a plazo de la glucemia), de la tensión arterial y de los parámetros del metabolismo de los lípidos

Answer: All chemical reactions occur with the transfer of electrons. Negatively charged entities are said to be reducing agents, meaning they are relatively electron rich and are able to donate electrons, reducing the charge of the entity with which they react. Relatively electron-poor entities are referred to as oxidizing agents, meaning they tend to pull electrons away. Thus, each substance in our body may act as either an oxidizing or reducing agent.

However, not just any negatively charged ion will be able to engage in the specific chemical reactions needed to neutralize oxygen free radicals. The HCO3- (bicarbonate) ions in alkaline bicarb water do not have this potential, whereas the OH- and mineral-rich water coming from an electrolysis machine (from tap water) does have this potential. That is
implied in the negative value of the “oxidation reduction potential.”
Free radicals are among the most damaging molecules in the body and are highly unstable molecules that are oxidizing agents and are electron deficient. They are a principal cause of damage and disease in the body.

Oxygen free radicals contribute significantly to a broad variety of harmful conditions in the body ranging from life-threatening conditions such
as heart disease, stroke and cancer, to less severe conditions such as sunburns, arthritis, cataracts, and many others . Free radicals MUST get electrons from somewhere and will steal them from whatever molecules are around, including normal, healthy tissues.
Damage to tissues results when free radicals strip these electrons from healthy cells. If the damage goes on unchecked,
this will lead to disease. For example, the oxidation of LDL cholesterol particles in arterial walls by free radicals triggers
an immune system response that results in atherosclerosis, the principal cause of heart disease. The negative ions in
alkaline water from an electrolysis machine are a rich source of electrons that can be donated to these free radicals in the
body, neutralizing them and stopping them from damaging healthy tissues. Specifically, these ions have the potential  to engage in the chemical reactions necessary to neutralize oxygen free radicals.

Agua Muerta

Después de más de dos  años tomando agua de mi Procesador de Agua Kangen , me vi en la necesidad de tomar agua comercial en botella ayer despues de agotar toda mi provision de agua que siempre tengo, asi que decidi volver a probar Smartwater mi antigua marca , mejor que no!!

Recently people have begun talking about small water molecules called “clusters” as being requirement for good water.But at present, there is still no clear understanding of this matter.

To put in another way,good water means water with strong REDUCTION (antioxidant) power that has not been POLLUTED with CHEMICAL substances. ( HARD TO FIND TODAY)

In simple words, water with natural minerals  calcium and magnesium principally and potassium, iron, copper and other minerals.

The relation calcium/magnesium is important.The appropriate ratio of calcium to magnesium is said to be 2:1

Cholesterol – Is it really so bad?

Have you been told your cholesterol is too high? And has it been recommended that you take one of the cholesterol lowering drugs? Before you let yourself be scared into submission, let me show you a little more about the whole picture.

Since the 1950’s, it has been assumed that cholesterol is the main culprit behind atherosclerosis, the thickening plaque lining the arteries that might presage a heart attack. It was therefore recommended that blood levels of cholesterol be lowered, and the recommended numbers themselves kept going down, According to Lynn Payer, in her book Medicine and Culture, the median total cholesterol range for initiating drug therapy was 340 to 359 mg/dl in 1983, 300 to 319 in 1986, 240 to 259 in 1990, and that same year dietary therapy was instituted at levels of 200 to 219 mg/dl total serum cholesterol.

Later on it was found that cholesterol could be split into different sized particles carrying different densities of lipids (fats) and protein. These were named lipoproteins, and they are compounds that have an exterior coating of protein covering a lipid core, which makes them water soluble. They contain three kind of lipids: cholesterol, phospholipids, and triglycerides, plus proteins. High density lipoprotein (HDL) is smaller in size, and contains about half protein, which makes it more dense. Low density lipoprotein (LDL), somewhat larger, is lower in protein and higher in cholesterol. They became known, respectively, as the “good” and the “bad” cholesterol, because elevated levels of the latter, and low levels of the former, were found to be associated with more atherosclerosis. Later on additional lipoproteins were found. Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) is larger than the LDL, containing more than half triglycerides with very little protein. The chylomicrons are very large compared to the HDL, and are composed of more than 80% triglycerides, with a little cholesterol and phospholipid and maybe 1% protein.

So this is all well and good. We’re supposed to have this or that amount of these in the bloodstream, with this or that proportion, so as to prevent the dreaded heart disease. But what are these particles really about? Where do they come from? What is their function, other than what we’re constantly being told, that they gum up the works?

You know, nature is very smart, and our bodies are super smart. They very carefully orchestrate their 75 – 80 trillion cells to work in very harmonious fashion so as to keep us alive. All the cells talk to each other, and there are always good reason why things are a certain way, in terms of survival of the bodymind. The fats in our bloodstream are there for a perfectly good reason. Let’s take a good look at the roles of cholesterol.

Cholesterol is classified as a lipid, although the dictionary definition is “a fat-soluble steroid alcohol.” There are two sources for cholesterol: endogenous (made by the body itself) and exogenous (consumed and found in foods). It is manufactured by the liver of all warm-blooded animals, and in humans it is a crucial component of several body structures and functions. The human liver manufactures between 800 and 1500 mg of cholesterol daily, so the endogenous contribution to total cholesterol is considerable.

Cholesterol has many important roles in the body. One of its functions is to lubricate the blood vessels to prevent damage to their walls by the vigorously rushing bloodstream. It is a major component of cell membranes, including all the membranes around all the organelles inside the cells, such as the mitochondria. It keeps these membranes with the right amount of both rigidity and flexibility. About 90% of the body’s total cholesterol resides in the cells. In addition, it helps build hormones (including estrogen, testosterone, and the stress hormone cortisol), bile acids, and Vitamin D. It affects the bones, because cholesterol in the skin is the precursor for Vitamin D, and without that nutrient the bones cannot obtain the calcium they need. Stress has been shown to temporarily increase cholesterol, as it makes up the stress hormones. Cardiologist Stephen Sinatra, in his book Heartbreak and Heart Disease, recounts how his cholesterol rose from 180 mg/dl to 240 mg/dl in about 6 hours, after a very stressful cardiac surgery he performed – even though he had not eaten in about 6 hours.

When we eat, the fats in our meal get broken down into fatty acids, and after they pass through the intestinal wall, they are picked up by the chylomicrons, go into the lymphatic system and straight into the blood, bypassing the liver. Why would they do such a thing? Everything else we eat goes to the liver first, but not the fats. The chylomicrons are carried by the blood all around the body, and act like delivery trucks, dropping off lipids at all the cells that require them, to provide energy, insulate against temperature extremes, protect against shock, maintaining the cell membranes, and building various compounds such as hormones. As they drop off their cargo, these particles get smaller and smaller, and after 14 hours only a few bits and pieces remain, which are picked up by the liver and recycled.

Meanwhile, the liver makes cholesterol, triglycerides, and other fatty acids, and packages them with proteins as VLDL, sending these also out as delivery trucks with the materials that the cells need. As the VLDL’s lose triglycerides, they become LDL’s, proportionately higher in cholesterol, which keep on traveling around bringing their content to the heart muscle, the fat stores, the mammary glands, the endocrine glands, and such, which use these lipids to build or repair their membranes, make hormones, or store them for energy and later use. Our smart liver then makes HDL which acts as a cleaning crew, and is sent out to pick up unused cholesterol from the cells back to the liver for cleanup or recycling.1

It becomes obvious that cholesterol is an essential substance for proper functioning. The more cholesterol is consumed, the less is made by the liver. Conversely, the less consumed, the more is made. Not only that, the more consumed, the less is absorbed. When people go on a high-protein diet, their cholesterol levels often go down. On the other hand, those who go on a low fat, high carbohydrate diet find their VLDL and triglycerides going up and their HDL going down, the opposite of what they would want according to the common medical wisdom. But the body wisdom is not to be dismissed – this reaction could mean that there is not enough cholesterol for the body’s needs, and so the body is conserving what it has.

So there you have it. A very sane and sensible system. Why would you want to use drugs to mess with it? The recommended blood values for cholesterol keep being lowered by the medical/pharmaceutical establishment. One scientist said that cholesterol-lowering drugs should be put in the water! I cannot imagine anything more foolish. The lowering of cholesterol alone would appear to be an unwise approach, considering that the drugs are known to cause liver toxicity and muscle weakness, peripheral neuropathy and even TGA, or transient global amnesia, a complete loss of memory for a short time.

There is controversy about the dangers of cholesterol. The International Network of Cholesterol Skeptics is a coalition of scientists that disagree with the theory that cholesterol causes heart disease. (www.thincs.org) Uffe Ravnskov, a Swedish physician and researcher, in his book The Cholesterol Myths: Exposing the Fallacy that Saturated Fat and Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease, charges that the majority of the review studies that support the cholesterol-heart disease association are seriously biased, that they ignore data that contradict the theory, and that they are written by researchers who get their major funding from pharmaceutical companies.

If “high cholesterol” of any variety is present with other symptoms of ill health, then lifestyle changes are in order to reduce the risk of disease. Specifically, one would do well to
1) increase noticeably the intake of fresh vegetables, salads, fruits, high-fiber whole grains and beans
2) lower or eliminate all kinds of added sugars and refined grain products
3) keep one’s weight within a healthy range
4) have a reasonable amount of regular physical activity every day
5) and attend to one’s emotional health and wellbeing.

All these will contribute to better health and to the reduction of heart disease risk
